Petrified wood-Dadoxylon limb with Fluorite- Chemnitz – Hilbersdorf in Saxony, Germany.

It was 1743 that David Frenzel was declared “Gemstone Inspector of the Kurfürst”. He discovered a petrified forest and had the petrified wood cut and polished for the lords of Saxony. Chemnitz/Hilbersdorf – a city in the state of Saxony in Germany – is the birthplace of collecting petrified wood. It …was here that petrified wood was first described. The formation the petrified wood is found in is very old: Permian, in the layer “Unterrotliegendes” – this dates back to about 270 million years. There is another specialty from here: sometimes fluorite solutions were able to seep into cracks of the petrified wood. The fluorite crystallized in cavities within the petrified wood creating violet areas within the silicified wood. This is very rare! The petrified forest is located in the middle of a densely populated city – the wood carrying layers are about 20 feet below street level. Only during construction is there a chance to unearth new wood.
