Opalized wood-gymnosperm
Arka, Hungary.
7″ across.
Arka on the western side of the Zemplen Mountains in eastern Hungary is a true “classic” site. It was around 1850 that large opalized logs were found here and brought to the Imperial Museum of Natural History in Vienna. They still can be admired there! The classic colorful logs from this site are no longer being found. The picture shows the typical colors for the site. The wood was embedded in a swamp, so the matrix at times will have a lot of small roots and twigs in it. Also typical cyperacea rhizoms can be found – often in perfect preservation. Most wood found here are gymnosperms.
